Zebra is one of the most sought-after and recognizable plains game species when booking a hunting safari in Africa. Namibia is home to two of the three Zebra species – Hartmann’s zebra and Burchell’s zebra.
Burchell’s Zebra

The Plains or Burchell’s zebra is the most common zebra found in Africa. Just as the name suggests, the plains zebra like to roam the open savannas or grasslands.
How to Identify a Burchell’s Zebra
The Burchell’s zebra features a black nose with thick upright mane hair. They have a grey shadow stripe between the white and black stripes. Their ears are also smaller than a Mountain zebra. Another way to identify a Burchell’s zebra is to look out for their socks-like features above their hooves and they have stripes that run down to their bellies.
Burchell’s zebras tend to congregate in families of about ten to 20 animals, which consist of a stallion with its mares and foals. These families then can form part of a larger herd of hundreds of animals and can often be found grazing with other plains game species such as Wildebeest and antelope.
Hartmann’s Zebra

The Hartmann’s zebra is a subspecies of the Cape Mountain zebra and are mostly found in central and southern Namibia in the rocky terrain of the mountains and surrounding flats.
How to Identify a Hartmann’s Zebra
Hartmann’s zebras feature a red/brown nose color, their stripes go all the way down to their hooves and they have large ears. The mane on a Mountain zebra is thinner and more horse-like than on a Burchell’s zebra. Mountain zebras only feature black and white stripes with a white underbelly.
How to Hunt Zebra in Namibia
Hunting zebra is typically done by the walk-and-stalk method or lay an ambush from a blind close to a waterhole. Zebras are both diurnal and nocturnal but are most active during the day. During the night, they will graze an hour or so at a time, but they tend not to move around a lot.
Both zebra species can also be hunted with a bow in Namibia.
