The black wildebeest, also known as the white-tailed gnu, is native to Southern Africa. They prefer to inhabit areas with short grass, such as open plains and savannas, as it provides them with better visibility to protect themselves against predators.

Black wildebeests are gregarious animals and occur in three groups:

  • Female herds consisting of adult females and their young.
  • Bachelor herds consisting only of yearlings and older males.
  • Territorial bulls.

Both male and female black wildebeest feature horns. The male’s horns are much heavier and thicker than the female’s horns.

Difference between a Black Wildebeest and a Blue Wildebeest

Other than the obvious color difference, the black wildebeest is smaller than the blue wildebeest. Black wildebeest weigh between 110 kg – 157 kg (242 lbs. – 346 lbs.). Blue wildebeest can weigh up to 250 kg (550 lbs.).

Black wildebeest can be identified by their dark brown coat, which appears black, whereas the blue wildebeest feature a bluish sheen. Another easy way to distinguish between a black and blue wildebeest is to look at their horns. The black wildebeest’s horns curve downwards and forwards, and the blue wildebeest’s horns curve sideways and upwards.

How to Hunt Black Wildebeest in Namibia

Wildebeests generally stick to savannah-type habitats, and the most common way of hunting a black wildebeest is the traditional spot-and-stalk method.

The best time of day to hunt black wildebeest is when they are active in the early mornings and late afternoons. Black wildebeest tend to spend the hottest time of the day resting.

Black wildebeest can also be hunted with a bow from a hide or a blind.

Minimum Caliber and Shot Placement

Hunting black wildebeest requires a minimum of .270 caliber. Longer shots will be required as they prefer to stick to open plains. The shot placement must be in the bottom third of the animal directly above the front shoulder.
