The Impala, also known as the “Rooibok” in Afrikaans, is a medium-sized plains game antelope found in eastern, southern Africa, and Namibia. Rooibok which directly translates to “red buck” features a reddish brown coat, tan flanks, and a white underbelly.

Sexually dimorphic, females are hornless and smaller than males. Male impala reach up to 75cm – 92cm (30 – 36 in) at the shoulder, while females reach 70cm – 85cm (28 – 33 in). The average weight of a male is around 53kg – 76kg (117 – 168 lb) and females 40kg – 53kg (88 – 117 lb).

Males grow slender, lyre-shaped horns 45cm – 92cm (18–36 in) long. Their arch-like structure allows interlocking of horns which helps a male throw off his opponent when fighting over territory.

How to Hunt Impala in Namibia

Hunting Impala is typically done by the walk-and-stalk method or lay an ambush from a blind close to a waterhole. Impala is diurnal (active mainly during the day) and feed and rest during the night. They do, however, lay low during the hot midday hours. The impala is found in woodlands and sometimes on the interface (ecotone) between woodlands and savannas near water sources.

Minimum Caliber Required

We recommend a .308 as the minimum caliber for hunting Sable in our area. The average shot is about 80 m (87 yards) to 150 m (163 yards), but the occasional shot of 200 m (218 yards) may occur.
