Sable can be found in the northern and central regions of Namibia’s savanna woodlands and grasslands during the dry season. They are also known to be one of the most expensive antelopes to hunt in Africa.

Sable form herds of 10 – 30 females and calves led by a single bull. As with the Roan antelope, the juvenile males are exiled from the herd at the age of 3 years old. The young males also form a separate herd called “bachelor groups” of up to 12 animals. The bulls are known to be extremely territorial and are known to confront predators (including lions) when attacked.

How to Identify a Sable

Sable can be recognized by their black and white bellies, face masks, and long curved horns. The bulls have a shiny black coat.  Depending on their age and genetic background some females have black coats like the bulls but the majority have reddish brown coats.

Both males and females feature ringed horns. Trophy horn size of Sable bulls run from 38“ to 55” although the average Sable trophy bull is about 40” to 42”.

Males reach about 117m – 140 cm (46–55 in) at the shoulder, while females are slightly shorter. Males typically weigh 235 kg (518 lb) and females 220 kg (490 lb).
