With its distinctive appearance, impressive stature, and formidable demeanor, the waterbuck presents a challenging and rewarding hunting experience. Waterbuck can be found in scrub and savanna regions adjacent to rivers, lakes, and valleys. Their habitat preference for grasslands and access to water results in a scattered distribution across various ecotones.

Anatomy of the Waterbuck

The waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope species characterized by its robust build, shaggy coat, and striking markings. Its most notable feature is the white ring encircling the rump, which contrasts sharply with the reddish-brown fur of the body. Both males and females possess elongated, ridged horns that curve gracefully backward.

Average Length and Weight of Male and Female Waterbuck

Males typically attain a shoulder height of approximately 127 cm (50 in), whereas females reach around 119 cm (47 in). Renowned for their substantial build, waterbuck rank among the heaviest antelope species. Newborns typically tip the scales at 13.6 kg (30 lb), with males exhibiting faster weight gain compared to females. On average, males weigh between 198–262 kg (437–578 lb), while females range from 161–214 kg (355–472 lb). Additionally, their tails measure 22–45 cm (8.7–17.7 in) in length.

Waterbuck Horns

The long, spiral horns of waterbucks curve backward and then forward, a distinctive feature exclusive to males. These horns typically measure between 55 to 99 cm (22 to 39 in) in length, with some correlation to the bull’s age. Females may exhibit rudimentary horn structures in the form of bony lumps on their skulls.

Habitat

Waterbucks are predominantly found near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and marshlands, hence their name. In Namibia, they inhabit a variety of habitats, including savannahs, woodlands, and grasslands. Their preference for moist areas ensures that waterbucks are often encountered in lush, green environments with ample vegetation for cover.

Best Way to Hunt Waterbuck:

Stalking Near Water Sources:

Waterbucks are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often venturing to water sources to drink. Stalking near these watering holes during these times can increase the likelihood of encountering waterbucks.

Utilizing Natural Cover:

Waterbucks are wary and alert prey, making stealth and camouflage crucial during the hunt. Hunters should use natural cover such as bushes, trees, and terrain features to approach undetected.

Patience and Persistence:

Waterbucks are known for their stamina and ability to cover long distances when pursued. Hunters should be prepared for a patient and persistent pursuit, as waterbucks may lead them on a challenging chase through varied terrain.
