The warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a resilient and adaptable member of the pig family found throughout Namibia and sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizable by its robust build, distinctive facial warts, and impressive tusks, the warthog is a trophy species that demands skill and strategy from hunters.

Characteristics of the Warthog:

  • Size: The height at the shoulder can reach up to 70 cm (27 inches), and their weight ranges between 60 and 100 kg (132 – 220 pounds). Females have a standing height of 60cm (23 inches) and a weight of 60 kg (132 pounds).
  • Tusks: The upper tusks can  reach lengths of 10 to 12 inches, while the lower tusks typically measure around 5 inches.
  • Appearance: Warthogs are easily identified by their bristly manes, facial warts, and the pronounced tusks that protrude from their mouths.

Despite being adorned with bristly hairs, their bodies and heads give the impression of being largely bare when observed from a distance. Only the crest along their back and the tufts on their cheeks and tails are visibly covered in hair. The English name for these creatures derives from their facial wattles, which are especially prominent in males.

Habitat in Namibia:

Warthogs thrive in a variety of habitats, ranging from grasslands and savannahs to woodlands and scrublands. In Namibia, these adaptable creatures can be found in different regions, making the pursuit of warthog an exploration of the country’s diverse landscapes.

Strategies for Hunting Warthog:

Stalking in the Savannah:

Warthogs are known for their keen senses, making stalking an effective strategy. Experienced hunters carefully approach warthog habitats, utilizing natural cover and terrain to get within optimal shooting range.

Watering Holes and Mud Wallows:

Warthogs are reliant on water, and hunting near watering holes or mud wallows during the dry season can increase the chances of a successful encounter. Patience and strategic positioning are key.

Early Mornings and Late Afternoons:

Like many African game species, warthogs are more active during the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings and late afternoons provide ideal hunting windows.
