Kudu Hunting Safaris is one of Africa’s most sought-after plains game trophies. The Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is found throughout central and northern Namibia, in grass areas, savannah woodlands, and rocky terrain under tree cover close to water sources.
The Greater Kudu is also known as “The Grey Ghost of Africa” due to its ability to easily disappear by blending into its surroundings. Kudu can be recognized by their blueish grey coats and long spiral horns. The horns of a mature kudu bull have 2 and a half twists and reach an average length of 45 – 50 inches when straightened. The Kudu is gregarious and can be found in herds of 6 – 20 animals. The older bulls are solitary outside of the mating season or form bachelor groups. The average trophy bull is 48” to 50” and the biggest one we’ve harvested at Otjandaue measured 62.5 “
Best time to Hunt Kudu in Namibia
The Namibian season starts from the 1st of February to the 30th of November. We recommend hunting Kudu in the dry season from May to November. Kudu rut in the winter months from May to July, which brings the bulls out of the bush a bit more to seek females, this is the peak time to hunt big bulls. During the dry season, there is much less vegetation which improves visibility. The animals also tend to congregate around water holes during these periods, which gives you an advantage when hunting from a blind.
How to hunt Kudu in Namibia
The Greater Kudu can be hunted with a rifle or a bow in Namibia.
Hunting Kudu with a Rifle
Your professional hunter will take you as close as possible to the animals where the hunting will commence on foot. Walking and stalking a Kudu requires plenty of skill and a lot of luck. Kudu have exceptional hearing with those big ears and these animals will disappear at the first sight of any disturbance. Kudu can also be hunted from a blind which is placed near water holes.
Minimum Caliber required for Hunting Kudu
We recommend a .308 as the minimum caliber for hunting Kudu in our area. Since most Kudu are found in thick vegetation, the hunter will have the opportunity to approach the animal within a reasonable distance before pulling the trigger.
The average shot is about 50 m (54 yards) to 150 m (163 yards), but the occasional shot of 200 m (218 yards) may occur.
Hunting Kudu with a Bow
Hunting Kudu with a bow will take a lot of patience and plenty of skill. We have five waterholes with well-equipped bow blinds where hunters can lie in ambush. The average shot distance when bow hunting kudu is 20 – 25 yards when hunting from a blind.
Minimum Draw Weight Required for Hunting Kudu with a Bow
Any draw weight greater than 70 lb is recommended for bow hunting kudu. (450-grain arrow recommended)
