Eland (Taurotragus oryx) is one of the most sought-after game species in Namibia, known for its large size, impressive horns, and challenging nature. Hunting Eland in Namibia requires patience, skill, and knowledge of their behaviour and habitat.
Identifying Eland
There are two species of Eland on our ranch, the Cape Eland (Taurotragus oryx) and the Livingstone Eland (Taurotragus oryx livingstonii). The Livingstone Eland is generally larger and heavier than the Cape Eland. Livingstone Eland bulls can weigh up to 1,200 kilograms (2,645 pounds), while Cape Eland bulls weigh up to 800 kilograms (1,765 pounds).
The Livingstone Eland has a brown coat with white stripes on its rump similar to a Kudu, while the Cape Eland has a tawny grey coloured coat.
Bulls have thick, twisted horns that can grow up to 4 feet in length and have a pronounced dewlap, which is a flap of loose skin that hangs down from their neck. Cows are smaller and lighter, with shorter horns and a less pronounced dewlap.
Shot Placement
Shot placement is crucial in hunting Eland to ensure a humane and ethical harvest. Eland have a large body with a heavy bone structure, so shot placement is important to quickly and effectively bring down the animal. The ideal shot placement for Eland is to aim for the heart/lung area, which is located just behind the shoulder. A broadside shot, where the animal is standing perpendicular to the hunter, offers the best opportunity for a clean and effective shot. It’s important to practice your shooting skills and be proficient with your chosen firearm before embarking on an Eland hunt.
Habitat
Eland are adaptable animals that inhabit a variety of habitats in Namibia. They are often found in savannas, woodlands, and grasslands, and are known for their ability to tolerate arid environments. Eland are also social animals and are often found in herds, ranging from a few individuals to larger groups. They are known for their keen senses, including excellent eyesight and hearing, which make them challenging to approach.
